Lightbulb Game Servers: Xeon vs Opteron

- Dual Opteron server boards are $400-600 (with all on board), Dual Xeon server boards are $200-300 (with all on board).
- Dual opteron boards that dont have all on board, dont have the top PCI slot aligned in a manner that will allow for a riser card to fit (found this out the hard way with the MSI dual opteron boards), which means they cant go in anything < 3u
- Xeon 2.8's are running around $230, Opteron 242's are running around $180, so the Opteron CPU's are definatly cheaper
- The Xeon server boards have 6-8 memory slots, while most of the opteron server boards only have 4. Memory gets expensive once you start buying 1-2GB Dimms (relative to 512mb ones), this contributes a signifigant amount to the final price.

I love XEON servers.

Few reasons for that.
It is high
It is reliable
The speeds are darn fast
It is big machine
Can support big heavy stuff
Loads the site damn fast

Though its pretty expensive but is good for streaming and gaming too.

Im not into much of the gaming servers but I have heard a lot about XEON servers and they do seem pretty reliable if there so popular and well liked....
